Frequently Asked Questions
Multiply your min/km pace by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km = 8:03 min/mile. Or divide your min/mile pace by 1.60934 to get min/km.
Pace is measured in time per distance (e.g., min/km), while speed is measured in distance per time (e.g., km/h). They are inversely related: a faster pace (lower number) means higher speed (higher number). Runners typically use pace; cyclists use speed.
Divide 60 by the treadmill speed in km/h to get your pace in min/km. For example, 10 km/h = 6:00 min/km. For miles, divide 60 by mph to get min/mile.
Beginner 5K runners typically run at 6:30-8:00 min/km (10:30-12:50 min/mile). A good benchmark goal is completing 5K under 30 minutes, which requires a pace of 6:00 min/km (9:39 min/mile).
A standard outdoor track is 400 meters. So 5K equals 12.5 laps. A mile is approximately 4 laps (1,609 meters). For a 10K, you would run 25 laps.
Most countries use the metric system (km, km/h), while the US, UK, and a few others commonly use imperial units (miles, mph). In international running, metric is standard. Most GPS watches support both systems.
A 4-minute mile equals 2:29 min/km pace, or 24.14 km/h. This is an elite benchmark that fewer than 1,500 people have achieved. For comparison, a 6-minute mile (a strong recreational runner) is 16.09 km/h.
1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers exactly. Conversely, 1 kilometer = 0.621371 miles. For quick mental math, multiply km by 0.62 or miles by 1.61.
Divide 60 by the speed in km/h. For example, 10 km/h = 60÷10 = 6:00 min/km. For 12 km/h = 60÷12 = 5:00 min/km. This calculator handles these conversions automatically.
Most of the world uses the metric system (kilometers), while the US, UK, and a few other countries commonly use miles. Major marathons report distances in both units. International athletics officially uses meters and kilometers for all race distances.
